MILDRED DELL - October 9, 1914 - April 8, 1997
Mildred died on April 8, 1997. She was the third eldest of eleven children
and is survived by four sisters and her son Gary John and his wife Cheryl Sellers Dell.
Mildred graduated as Valedictorian from Leslie High School in 1932. In 1936
she graduated from Western State Teachers College (now Western Michigan
University) with a BA Degree and began her teaching career in Leslie, Michigan where she met Elwyn Richard
Dell of Woodland, Michigan.
Because Elwyn was the School Superintendent and Mildred was a teacher in the same district, their marriage on April 4, 1938
remained a secret for several months.
Mildred & Elwyn moved to Fremont, Michigan in 1946 where Elwyn was
Superintendent. In 1951 they moved to Wayne, Michigan and in 1957 Mildred returned to the work
force as a Latin teacher at WMHS.
In 1964 Mildred earned her MA in Guidance & Counseling from the University of Michigan and became a Guidance Counselor
at WMHS.
While living in Wayne, Mildred was actively involved in the First United Methodist
Church, AAUW, the ARCHE Club and Kiwini-Queens.
She retired from teaching in 1974 and she and Elwyn moved to Venice, Florida where they remained active in
church and community activities. Elwyn & Mildred were married 52 years.
Elwyn died in 1991.
